PCBs Are Integrated Into 3D-Printed Structures

Printed circuit boards (PCBs) are the basic building block of most electronic devices that we use today. They can be found in everything from door openers (single layer) to smartphones (6 layers), and computers and servers (20+ layers). The PCB contains a base plate of heat-insulated and conductive material that is covered with a network of small lines, called conductor patterns or wiring, that provide connections for the individual parts that make up the device.

In the beginning, electronic pcb board were made from a variety of materials, including Masonite and thin wooden planks. The first functional PCB was invented in 1943 by Paul Eisler, who laminated conductors directly onto an insulated board. This was the precursor to modern PCBs.

Today, most PCBs are made from rigid substrates that are usually made of FR-4 grade glass fiber reinforced epoxy resin. Some are also made of flexible material to accommodate more complex designs. Depending on the design, the PCB can be single- or double-sided. A single-sided PCB has a single conductive layer layed over the substrate, while a double-sided PCB has two conductive layers. A multilayer PCB typically alternates between the substrate and conductive layers.

Once a design is complete, the PCB can be sent to a fabrication plant for assembly. It is first etched, which removes all the copper that is not needed for the traces. A laser drill is then used to create holes in the bare circuit board for placing the components. These holes are known as nets, and great care is taken to ensure that they do not cross areas of excessive noise that would degrade signal integrity. This is done by using CAD tools that can set up rules and constraints to help ensure the nets are properly routed.

A plated metal edge is often added to the edges of the circuit board for soldering. This adds structural strength to the board and helps ensure that the soldering is a good quality. In some cases, it is necessary to create a special shape for a connection, known as a “finger” or a “mouse bite.” Examples include the finger on the PCBs that came with older cartridge-based video games and the mouse bites on the LilyPad ProtoSnap.

The final step of the process is adding the electronic components to the board. This can be done through through-hole or surface-mount. Through-hole components have wires that plug into holes on the substrate, while surface-mount components are placed directly on the conductive layer. The components are then soldered to the traces through an automated process.

A specialized type of PCB is a medical PCB, which must meet stringent regulations to protect human health and safety. These types of PCBs are designed to be small and lightweight, so that they can fit into a small space while providing the functionality necessary for specific medical applications. They must be highly reliable to ensure that they perform as intended, and they must pass rigorous testing to receive certification.
